Peru: 93% of health care workers received booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine

08:57 | Lima, Nov. 7.

The administration of the booster dose or third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers is progressing rapidly, reaching 93% of said target population, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has reported.

"The third dose has been administered to around 93% of said population. The vaccination of staff at the National Health Institute (INS), in epidemiology units across the country, and at Minsa's headquarters, started today (November 6). Private sector providers are being vaccinated too," said Alexis Holguin, General Director of Strategic Interventions in Public Health at the Ministry of Health.

According to Holguin, the sector expects to fully immunize 600,000 health professionals against COVID-19 over the course of two weeks.

"We are implementing some protocols to vaccinate police personnel (with the third dose). Let's keep in mind that elderly people are being immunized at the same time," the expert said in an interview with TV Peru on Saturday.

Holguin recommends people should get the booster dose six months after the second shot.

"We have to keep in mind that the vaccination of elderly people has been gradually implemented. People over 80 were vaccinated first, and then it was the turn of those aged 70 and above, and so on," the Minsa official stated.

"Therefore, some may be vaccinated in December, January or February. This will be carried out gradually," he added.

Minsa's Immunization Director Gabriela Jimenez noted that everyone aged 65 years and older can find their vaccine appointment information on the Pongo el Hombro (I Lend a Shoulder) platform.
