Peruvian appellation of origin of pisco is recognized by 70 countries around the world, and this recognition came for the quality of its flagship drink, Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) has affirmed.

"Our national drink has 70 denominations of origin recognized by the same number of countries, and we are working on the protection of our pisco through trade openness and the more than 20 agreements in force," PromPeru Chairman Luis Torres told Andina news agency.

"We are doing sterling work with the private sector and regional governors in a bid to increase pisco exports, and the aim is to reach US$7 million this year, considering sales hit US$5.8 million by the end of 2018," he added.

Torres noted that Casa Peru (Peru House) served as a showcase and tasting event to feature Peruvian pisco at national and international fairs. The flagship drink enjoyed remarkable acceptance among the attendees.

"Nearly 40 Peruvian pisco brands had the opportunity to showcase their different liquors made with the eight types of pisco grapes produced in five regions of Peru," he remarked.

"We are cementing our position in the United States and Europe, where our pisco keeps adding medals. Besides, we will be making our second appearance at a China import fair by the end of November," he added.

It should be noted that Thailand has recognized pisco as a denomination of origin produced in Chile. However, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be appealing the Asian nation's decision.

The PromPeru Executive-President stressed the Government is promoting innovation in the pisco industry and in distillates of other products, such as potatoes, where Peru has great potential.
