Guatemala recognizes denomination of origin for pisco in favor of Peru

12:43 | Lima, Jan. 25.

Guatemala's Industrial Property Register (IRP) has recognized —for an indefinite period— the denomination of origin for pisco in favor of Peru.

This new achievement was possible thanks to efforts undertaken by the Inca country's Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Peruvian Embassy in the Central American country, in coordination with the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi).

In this sense, the attempts to extend international recognition of Peru's rights over its flagship drink and to prevent trademark registrations that misuse the denomination of origin continue to yield results.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Indecopi, these diplomatic and legal efforts act in response to a strategy aimed at protecting and legitimizing Peruvian pisco worldwide

Thus, the Inca country —through its Foreign Affairs Ministry and Indecopi— reaffirms its commitment to defending the denomination of origin for pisco around the globe.

As is known, Peru's flagship product pisco is a brandy type of drink made out of grapes.

Peruvian pisco exports reached US$4 million in the first half of 2018, an 8.2% increase compared to the same period in 2017 (US$3.7 million).

Pisco varieties

One of them is Puro, which is special due to its fine distillation and single-grape origin.

Another one is Mosto Verde —made from the distillation of fresh musts that are not fully fermented.

Also, among the options, there is Acholado —obtained from the blend of different grape or pisco varieties.

Finally, there is Aromatico. This kind of pisco smells like flowers and fruits, featuring an aromatic flavor.
