In the light of the coronavirus crisis, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra urged countries to recognize the COVID-19 vaccine and its treatment as global public goods by ensuring timely and equitable access to the medicines and equipment necessary to combat the disease.

The Head of State participated in a virtual session commemorating the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

In his speech, he noted that "nobody will be safe until everybody is safe" given the magnitude of the pandemic and the highly contagious and unknown nature of COVID-19.

The Peruvian leader stressed the need to face the severe socio-economic consequences caused by the pandemic, which go beyond the complexity of the health challenge, and at the same time showcase the value of the United Nations to build global, effective and inclusive solutions, supported by a strengthened multilateral system.

"In this sense, the collective objective is defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were agreed at this hall five years ago," Mr. Vizcarra expressed.

"To do so, count on the continued commitment of Peru, which has contributed as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the past 75 years," he added.

Remarks were made on Monday at the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations.
