As part of Panam Sports Week in Lima, the "Women in Sports" forum was held, bringing together prominent international figures to reflect on female leadership and its contribution to sports development ahead of the Lima 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
During the event, discussions focused on women's empowerment, protection policies promoted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and strategies aimed at strengthening female participation in sports.
The gathering brought together representatives from the 41 Panam Sports member countries, less than a year before the start of Lima 2027.
Also taking part were former Costa Rican President and IOC member Laura Chinchilla, Canadian rower Jane Thornton, Brazilian pentathlete Yane Marques, and former Peruvian volleyball player Cecilia Tait.
One of the main speakers was former Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, considered one of the world's greatest sprinting stars and a former 100-meter world record holder.
"Working for women in sport represents a great opportunity. I have always believed in their abilities and in the fundamental role they play both on and off the field of play," Powell said.
In turn, Cecilia Tait highlighted the importance of continuing to create spaces that boost women's participation and contribute to the success of the Lima 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games.
"The experience we have gained commits us to working to ensure that Lima 2027 is a success and leaves an important legacy for Peruvian sports," she stated.
The Panam Sports Week agenda will continue with various activities in the capital, including the organization's 64th General Assembly.
Strategic issues concerning the development of sport across the continent will be addressed, and the host city of the 2029 Junior Pan American Games will be selected.
These activities are being held with the support of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD) and the Lima 2027 Organizing Committee —both chaired by Oscar Fernandez— as part of efforts to consolidate Peru as a regional benchmark in hosting major sporting events.
