Peru's President: Over 90% of infected citizens managed to defeat COVID-19

14:33 | Lima, Oct. 28.

More than 90% of people who contracted the COVID-19 virus have already managed to overcome the disease so far in Peru, the President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra highlighted on Wednesday.

"I remember that a few months ago I felt satisfied because 50% of those infected had already overcome the disease. Now, more than 90% of those who had the virus in their organisms, have already defeated the disease," he stressed.

Likewise, top official underlined that the number of deaths last week —with respect to the previous ones— is significantly lower. Yet the Government will keep on working to continue with the trend of lowering COVID-19-related cases and deaths in the country.

"Regarding the epidemiological curve, although it shows a permanent decrease and a contagion factor of less than 1, we were told today that this curve of decreases is stabilizing; this means that we must make an additional effort to continue lowering it because we are not in an optimal condition yet," he noted.

The statesman reiterated his call on the population not to become overconfident because of the recent low infection rates.

"We must undertake greater efforts in order to be able to defeat this pandemic and improve the response capacity. If there is a second wave, we must be prepared," he insisted.

Today's remarks were made during a televised address to the nation from the Government Palace in Lima.

President Vizcarra was joined by Prime Minister Walter Martos and other Cabinet members on the occasion.
