The rate of coronavirus (COVID-19) infections has reduced from 33,000 to 16,000 cases per week nationwide and by more than 70% in Puno, Madre de Dios, Amazonas, and Moquegua regions, according to the EsSalud Heat Map report.

"Declines have been observed —in the week from September 27 to October 3, compared to the previous one— in all age groups: children (59%), teenagers (57%), youth (48%), adults (51%) and the elderly (52%)," EsSalud's Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit Chief Dante Cersso explained.

The reduction in new cases was more marked in provinces than in Lima (the capital city): In all age groups, the number of new cases per week reduced between 32% and 36% in Lima and Callao, while between 56% and 67% in the rest of the country.

The EsSalud spokesperson reported that the number of new cases per week dropped by 51% in the country and asked Peruvians not to lower the guard despite this decline.

Four regions

In four regions, the number of new cases per week reduced by more than 70%: Puno (-83%), Madre de Dios (-82%), Amazonas (-77%), and Moquegua (-75%).

While in 17 regions, the rate of new cases per week decreased between 50% and 70%: Tacna (-70%), Piura (-67%), Arequipa (-68%), Huanuco (-65%), Ucayali (-65%), Ica (-66%), Callao (-67%), Ayacucho (-65%), La Libertad (-62%), Huancavelica (-62%), Lambayeque (-62%), Junin (-60%), Tumbes (-55%), Cusco (-58%), San Martin (-50%), Cajamarca (-51%), and Apurimac (-50%).

In the remaining four regions, the number of new cases dropped below 50%, compared to the previous week: Loreto (-39%), Ancash (-39%), Pasco (-34%), and Lima (-25%).

"The current figures are very similar to the ones recorded in the last weeks of April. This is encouraging, but we cannot lower our guard, since this virus is new and its potential consequences in the medium and long term are not known yet. Let us keep taking care of one another to maintain this downward trend," Cersso stated.
