Peru's President on COVID-19 campaign: We must be clear and direct

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday highlighted the latest communication campaign launched by the Executive Branch called "COVID-19 does not kill by itself. Let us not be accomplices," saying that the Government has to be clear and direct.

The Head of State said that when the quarantine was lifted in most regions across the country —at the end of June— a minority of Peruvians began to relax the protective measures, putting their lives and health at risk, as well as of those around them.

Therefore, the campaign is initially aimed at them, thus raising their awareness and responsibility.

According to the Peruvian leader, people become accomplices of COVID-19 by organizing parties, social gatherings and sporting events where there is no control and people get together.

"We cannot allow that kind of irresponsibility. We have to be clear and direct in condemning it," he stated.

The top official affirmed that many people have welcomed the campaign, and those who reject it are doing so because they find it harsh, but in a war like this "we have to be direct, clear, saying things as they are and using the words we should."

Mr. Vizcarra emphasized that there are people who do comply with safety protocols, so this message is not meant for them.

Remarks were made during

a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima. The President was joined by Prime Minister Walter Martos and other Cabinet members on the occasion.

As is known, the Executive Branch extended the state of emergency from September 1 thru 30. It is characterized by nationwide curfew at nighttime and on Sundays, as well as localized quarantine in 4 regions and 46 provinces in other 14 regions.
