President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday supervised the inauguration of the new Villa EsSalud (Social Health Insurance System-EsSalud Village), a temporary hospital in Madre de Dios that is intended to improve the care of COVID-19 patients in this region of the Peruvian Amazon.

The Head of State, along with EsSalud Executive-President Fiorella Molinelli and Environment Minister Kirla Echegaray, toured the facilities, which included an oxygen generating plant.

Equipped with 50 beds to treat patients with mild and moderate symptoms, the hospital includes an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with mechanical ventilators.

In statements to the press, the President emphasized that the running of this health center enhances the health response capacity in Madre de Dios.

However, he pointed out that preventive measures —involving both health personnel and regional authorities— must be put into place to treat the population with medicines at an early stage of the infection.

According to the Peruvian leader, the incidence of COVID-19 cases has started to reduce in Madre de Dios, as well as in other regions throughout the country.

On the matter, he called on the Government, the State, the private sector and the community to work together to fight the pandemic.

When asked about the possibility of lifting the localized quarantine in Madre de Dios —extended until August 31— Mr. Vizcarra affirmed that this decision will depend on the assessment of the situation and that the welfare of the people will always be the priority.
