Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Friday participated in the 27th APEC Summit, which —for the first time— was held in a virtual format to host the leaders of the 21 Asia-Pacific economies.

During his speech, the Head of State welcomed the approval of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, which contains the forum's new guidelines —an initiative that was proposed by Peru during its pro-tempore presidency in 2016.

Likewise, the Head of State highlighted the importance of promoting quality growth in the Asia-Pacific region —one that is balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative, safe, and centered on people.

Furthermore, the top official stressed the urgency of carrying out structural reforms that improve access to credit, technology, and training for all economic agents —particularly the smallest ones— as well as the need to develop a local business ecosystem that encourages, as well as rewards entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability.

Concerning trade, the statesman emphasized Peru's firm support for a rules-based Multilateral Trading System and the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as its interest in advancing towards the achievement of a high-quality Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area.

In terms of health, the Peruvian leader highlighted the importance of ensuring universal, timely, and balanced access to treatments and vaccines against COVID-19.

APEC

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum is one of the most important regional economic integration initiatives in the world.

The APEC forum brings together the 21 most dynamic economies in Asia-Pacific, including the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, and Korea, among others, which —together— represent 60% of world's GDP, 47% of global trade, and 38% of the planet's population

The mission of the APEC forum is to promote quality economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region, which is why it works to remove barriers that prevent the proper functioning of the market economy, as well as the free flow of goods, services, investments, and people in our region.

Peru has been actively participating in the APEC forum since 1998.
