Peru's President: Contagion level has decreased, but virus persists

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that COVID-19 contagion level has decreased in Peru.

However, the Head of State warned that the virus persists. Therefore, the top official urged the population to remain vigilant.

"The level of contagion has decreased in weeks, but the virus is present (…). We must not lower our guard," he expressed.

Likewise, the top official announced that State ministers will continue travelling to all the country's regions in order to reinforce medical care and meet the most urgent demands.

Furthermore, the statesman indicated that a more effective control will be carried out for the fulfillment of sanitary protocols, within the framework of the current economic reactivation.

Thus, operations will be carried out at shopping centers and other premises, in order to supervise compliance with the established limits and avoid crowds.

Moreover, Mr. Vizcarra said that total mandatory social immobilization on Sundays will remain in force throughout the current month.

He also asked the population for patience and perseverance to continue complying with the measures decreed by the Government, which are aimed at safeguarding the health and lives of all citizens.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima. The President was joined by Prime Minister Walter Martos and other Cabinet members on the occasion.

As is known, the Executive Branch extended the state of emergency from September 1 thru 30. It is characterized by nationwide curfew at nighttime and on Sundays, as well as localized quarantine in 4 regions and 46 provinces in other 14 regions.
