The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday affirmed that the Bicentennial's challenge means joining efforts to build a better country and embody the dream of equality for the republican life.

In this sense, the Head of State stressed the need for the convergence of different points of view, experiences, and ways of thinking, as well as for promoting unity.

"This is the challenge posed to us by 200 years of independent life," he expressed after remarking that everyone has the right and duty to join efforts, as well as to put an end to the exclusion of ethnic groups and women.

This way, it can be said in a true and decisive way that Peru is a nation of equal citizens, in which everyone is capable of freely imagining, designing, deciding, and shaping the future.

"That is the debt to be settled after 200 years of republican life," he emphasized.

Recalling the council and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 15, 1821, the top official noted it is time for Peruvians to commit to building the nation dreamed of by the precursors, intellectuals, and those who rebelled against the then-viceroyalty, such as Tupac Amaru and Micaela Bastidas.

With this commitment, the statesman said it will be possible to "build the Peru we all want" and realize "the dream of a republican life based on equality once and for all."

Remarks were made during his participation in the ceremony to commemorate the 200 years of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

On this occasion, President Sagasti was joined by Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra and Lima City Mayor Jorge Muñoz.

The National Election Board (JNE) has yet to announce to the winner of the June 6 presidential runoff election.
