The
President of the Republic, Francisco Sagasti, on Monday affirmed that the electoral results reported so far constitute a clear and firm call for reconciliation and national unity.
"They imply an imperative to reach an agreement on the course Peru should take, at the beginning of the third century of independence," he explained.
"We are all called to defend the country's flag, together and in fellowship, respecting our differences, without belittling one another, as well as appreciating and recognizing ourselves as equal," the President pointed out.
The Peruvian leader noted that all Peruvians are "called to defend the flag of unity, under the same sky" and above all differences.
"For a country that is able to defeat the pandemic, intolerance, and pessimism in the difficult current circumstances, within the framework of this terrible pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 180,000 compatriots," he added.
He noted that Peruvians have reaffirmed their faith in democratic institutions by going to the polls to express their sovereign will and choose the next leader of the nation, whose government will observe the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence.
The Head of State emphasized that the sacrifice of Francisco Bolognesi will be commemorated every year on June 7. He commanded other Peruvians, in defense of honor, dignity, and freedom of an entire nation.
Mr. Sagasti's remarks were contained in his speech marking the 141st anniversary of the Battle of Arica.
