Peru's President: A new batch of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines to arrive today

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday reported that a new batch of 50,000 vaccines from Pfizer pharmaceutical company will land in Lima this evening.

In an interview with Tacna's Radio Uno, the Head of State explained that shipments —consisting of the same amount— will arrive on Wednesdays for the next two weeks.

Likewise, many of these vaccines will be used for the second dose of those citizens who have already been vaccinated with the previous one.

"After two weeks, not 50,000 will arrive each week, but 200,000. In two or three weeks, the conditions will be available to expand the vaccination with Pfizer to places that rely on an adequate cold chain," he indicated.

Furthermore, the top official said he expects 1,296,000 AstraZeneca doses to arrive in April.

Meanwhile, negotiations continue with Gamaleya, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson to —besides signing a contract— advance their shipments in the next three months.

"Concerning vaccines, the Government is doing everything it can in an extremely difficult global context for countries like ours," he stressed.

The Peruvian leader also recalled that —when he became President in November 2020— there were not any contracts signed for the delivery of vaccines. However, there are now 48 million doses committed, and an additional 40 million are being negotiated.

Given producer restrictions, the vaccines —for the most part— will arrive in Peru during the second half, but the way to accelerate the arrival is being assessed, he said.

Asked about a possible third COVID-19 wave, Mr. Sagasti indicated that it is happening around the world, adding that such scenario is being considered.

Yet the Government seeks to anticipate what it would be like, particularly in the winter season which begins in June.
