Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Thursday affirmed that the transitional Government's primary mission is to ensure that 2021 general elections are free, transparent, and competitive.

As she remarked, the Executive Branch will guarantee the neutrality of the entire Government apparatus and will promote joint actions with regions and municipalities, so that the principle of neutrality becomes the leading wagon of civil service.

In an interview with RPP radio and TV station, she noted that another component —within the framework of elections— will be citizen participation.

"The weak channels of citizen participation —and especially youth participation— have drawn attention during the current crisis. That will be another great challenge," Bermudez pointed out.

Moreover, the Cabinet chief emphasized that the transitional period will be short but intense when it comes to efforts.

Regarding the relationship with Congress, Bermudez said that she plans to meet with Parliament's Chairwoman Mirtha Vasquez to identify the best dialogue mechanism, noting the Executive Branch's willingness to engage in sustained dialogue.

The methodology has not been established yet, as schedules must be taken into consideration. This will be coordinated with President Francisco Sagasti and will be reported to the Congress Board members.

"The idea of the President is to remain open to convene and dialogue. Clear communication with Congress is essential to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers," she added.

The government official recalled that —in accordance with a constitutional mandate— the President of the Council of Ministers must attend Congress to present the Government's general policy statement (and request a vote of confidence) within the first 30 days in office.

When asked about the new Energy and Mines Minister, the recently sworn-in Prime Minister assured that the name will be revealed within the next 24 hours.
