Peru's parliamentary elections: At least 11 former lawmakers likely to return to Congress

More than 11 former lawmakers may come back to occupy seats in Peru's Legislative Branch during the 2020-2021 period, following the 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections held last Sunday.

From Popular Action, and representing northern Tumbes region, Manuel Merino de Lama might return to Congress. He was first elected parliamentarian in 2001 while being endorsed by the same political group. Later, in 2011, he won the popular vote being part of Peru Posible.

For his part, Omar Chehade was elected parliamentarian in 2011, while he was running supported by Gana Peru party. There are high chances that the Alianza Para el Progreso candidate will soon be part of Congress.

Representing Union Por el Peru, Jose Vega became legislator in 2006, and he may soon return to Parliament. Virgilio Acuña may also have won a seat last weekend, after having represented Solidaridad Nacional in 2011.

Fuerza Popular's Martha Chavez was a chosen to become a legislator at the Democratic Constituent Congress in 1992. Since then, Chavez represented the Fujimori parties in 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2011. She has now secured a new seat.
Martires Lizana —who became a FP lawmaker in 2016— is also likely to go back to Parliament on this occasion.

Concerning Podemos Peru party, Carlos Almeri may return to the Legislative Branch. He already served as Congressman in 2001 representing Peru Posible.

Meanwhile, former Peruanos Por el Kambio representatives Alberto de Belaunde and Gino Costa will keep their seats now backed by Partido Morado.

Former Peru Posible lawmaker Rennan Espinoza (2011-2016) may have become parliamentarian again, this time via Somos Peru party. 

Finally, Frente Amplio's Carlos Enrique Fernandez Chacon is also likely to return to Parliament. He was first elected Congress member back in 1980.

Elections

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
