Peru's Health Min: It is time to step up actions to get access to COVID-19 vaccine

00:00 | Lima, Jul. 31.

Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed that —when it comes to fighting COVID-19— immunization is one of the most important control pillars, adding that all citizens need to come together to find a way to access the vaccine and, thus, protect health workers and the population.

The high-ranking official highlighted that Peru has been monitoring the development of different candidate vaccines for COVID-19 around the world, some of which have made it into Phase 3.

For its part, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) participates in the multisectoral commission for coordination and articulation of actions to gain access to this asset once it becomes available, since immunization is the most effective strategy when it comes to preventing damage and avoids mortality efficiently.

"It is time to step up actions that allow us to gain access to a vaccine for COVID-19. Within this framework, universities and research institutions are the ones that collaborate more closely, although this poses many scientific and technical challenges," she said.

Additionally, Mazzetti announced that Minsa technical teams are already working on a National Vaccination Plan to identify the groups that need to get vaccinated first as part of a strategy that allows the country to be as efficient as possible.

The sector's head recalled that —in his Address to the Nation— President Martin Vizcarra affirmed that bringing the vaccine against COVID-19 to Peru is a national goal and that it will be declared a universal public good.
