Peru's Health Min: Increase in 2021 budget to enhance primary care level's capacity

00:55 | Lima, Jul. 30.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) will allocate additional resources to the primary care level as part of a change in the model, which will provide better health services for the fight against COVID-19 and the treatment of different diseases, the sector's head Pilar Mazzetti affirmed.

The minister explained that the primary care level —meaning health posts and centers— is being strengthened to tackle the pandemic, and the process will be intensified in 2021 with the budget increase that Minsa will receive, as recently announced.

In his Address to the Nation, President Martin Vizcarra disclosed that next year's initial budget for health will be S/20 billion (around US$5.66 billion), higher than the S/18.5 billion (around US$5.2 billion) allocated for 2020.

Thus, the sector will go from prioritizing the construction of large hospitals to prioritizing the expansion of health posts and centers.

"The investments in Optimization, Marginal Expansion, Rehabilitation and Replacement (IOARR) of infrastructures should be ready in the next 12 months, so that the next administration can implement them," she stated.

Demand for health staff

The Cabinet member went on to say that the fight against the coronavirus pandemic is being redirected to the primary health level. To that end, a great number of health workers have been hired, which will be consolidated next year in order to provide care to patients with mild diseases that can be easily treated.

In this regard, the high-ranking official noted that Minsa keeps on hiring doctors to reinforce the primary care level, adding that calls remain open and can be found on the ministry's website.

"Doctors, nurses, and nursing assistants —who like hard work— are invited, as there is a great demand for personnel," she added.
