Peru's FA Ministry: President Castillo to receive OAS mission

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo will meet with the Organization of American States (OAS) mission that will visit Lima to analyze the political situation in Peru, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

In a communiqué, the government agency said the OAS General Secretariat has proposed that the mission arrive in Lima on November 20th to hold working meetings on the 21st and 22nd.

If these dates are confirmed, Peru's top official will return from abroad no later than the early hours of November 21st, so that he can receive the mission and hold the corresponding audiences.

Last Wednesday, the Head of State requested Congress' authorization to travel overseas from November 14th to 21st in order to participate at the APEC Forum to be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Last October, the OAS Permanent Council appointed a high-level group to visit Peru and analyze the situation —in accordance with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

The mission is composed of the

Foreign Affairs Ministers of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero; Belize, Eamon Courtenay; Ecuador, Juan Carlos Holguin; Guatemala, Mario Adolfo Bucaro; and Paraguay, Julio Cesar Arriola.

The commission is also made up of the Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs of Colombia, Laura Gil; the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Christian Guillermet; and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Eladio Loizaga, who will act as Representative of the OAS General Secretariat.

On October 20th, the OAS issued a resolution supporting the preservation of democratic institutions and representative democracy in Peru.

Ten days later, OAS Permanent Council Chairman and Permanent Representative of Suriname to the institution, Ambassador Marten Schalkwijk, announced the composition of the high-level group that will analyze the situation in Peru —in follow-up to the resolution approved by the body at its special session held on October 20th.
