The Organization of American States (OAS) on Thursday issued a resolution supporting the preservation of democratic institutions and representative democracy in Peru.

Said resolution was approved by the OAS Permanent Council at a special session held on October 20 in the Hall of the Americas at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to consider the situation in Peru.

Precisely, the resolution was adopted by acclamation. All the representatives who took the floor expressed their public support for it. Some of them even extended their support to President Pedro Castillo.

Thus, the OAS Permanent Council has resolved to "express its solidarity and support for the democratically elected Government of the Republic of Peru and the Republic of Peru, as well as the preservation of democratic institutions."

Moreover, the Council has decided to set up a high-level group made up of representatives of the Member States, in accordance with the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to carry out a visit to Peru in order to analyze the situation, of which a report shall be made.

The resolution also expressed the willingness of the OAS to provide support and cooperation, at the request of the Government of Peru, through efforts to promote dialogue and the strengthening of its democratic system of government.

Furthermore, the Council called on all involved actors to undertake actions framed within the rule of law, bearing in mind that Article 2 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter provides that "the effective exercise of representative democracy is the basis for the rule of law and of the constitutional regimes of the member states of the Organization of American States."

In fact, Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa himself asked the OAS Permanent Council to send a mission to Peru to assess the political situation in a plural and objective manner, and to provide spaces for dialogue and agreement.
