The Peruvian naval ship, BAP Carrasco, will set sail for the Antarctica on Monday, December 18, with the aim of performing several logistical and scientific activities, both at the
Machu Picchu Antarctic Scientific Base (ECAMP) and on board the oceanographic vessel, through scientific research cruises in marine areas of Antarctic interest.
The oceanographic unit will carry 74 crew members from the
Peruvian Navy, who will be later joined by scientists from different institutions and universities, both national and international, to conduct scientific research.
During this campaign, 12 research works will be carried out with the participation of 37 national and international scientists, including guests from Chile, Argentina, and Colombia, as well as officers from Navies of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Southern Korea, U.S., Spain, and Italy.
The Peruvian Navy, through the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation, is responsible for running maritime operations of the Antarctic campaign.
To that end, it has been involved in their scientific, logistical, and operational planning, in coordination with the
Directorate of Antarctic Affairs of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Peruvian Navy reported that Peru is about to commemorate its 35th anniversary of receiving the status of Consultative Member of the Antarctic Treaty.
Such status was obtained through the construction of the Machu Picchu Antarctic Scientific Base (ECAMP) during the austral summer of 1989.
This fact strengthened Peru's image before the international scientific community and represented a milestone within the framework of Antarctic cooperation.
