Attorney General Patricia Benavides filed a constitutional complaint against ex-President Pedro Castillo, for alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy, before the Peruvian Congress on Monday.

In addition to Castillo, the complaint also covers the ex-Prime Minister, Betssy Chavez; the ex-Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Roberto Sanchez; and ex-Minister of Interior, Willy Huerta.

It should be noted that, during a plenary session in the early hours of Monday, Parliament approved a legislative resolution to lift the prerogative of political impeachment enjoyed by Pedro Castillo, which authorizes the Public Ministry to prosecute him for the aforementioned crimes.

Castillo was caught in flagrante delicto for the crime of rebellion last December 7, after he announced his decision to dissolve Congress and reorganize the judicial system through the installation of a government of exception to rule by decree until new legislative elections.

Simultaneously, Parliamentarians approved an impeachment process against him with 101 votes in favor, after which the presidential succession established in Article 115 of the Political Constitution proceeded.

Afterwards, then Vice-President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra was sworn in as the new President of Peru, thus becoming the first woman to hold the highest office of the nation.

According to the Criminal Code, Pedro Castillo could be given a sentence of not less than 10 years and not more than 20 years for the aforementioned crime.

Currently, Castillo remains detained at the National Police Special Operations Unit (Diroes) headquarters in Lima's Ate district.
