Peru-India FTA might increase to 4 billion potential clients

10:34 | Lima, Oct. 30.

Peru's international target market might increase from 3 billion to 4 billion potential clients through the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) —currently in negotiation— with India, Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio has informed.

Furthermore, the official indicated the Inca country's exports expanded fivefold since 2003, which proves FTAs draw new investments.

It should be noted Peru nowadays exports goods and services to over 170 countries. In 2010, there were only 144 destinations.

"In 2017, Peru was the country with the third highest export increase in the world; that was 22%, and the first one in the region," Minister Popolizio said.

"The Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) projects non-traditional exports will reach US$14 billion by end-2018, thus setting a historical record," he added.

Within this framework, the official affirmed Peru continues to opt for regional integration and trade openness. In this sense, the Peru-Australia FTA and the CPTPP (TPP-11) were signed this year.

Pacific Alliance

The Pacific Alliance —created in 2011— is an integration initiative focused on reducing trade barriers, as well as fostering the free circulation of goods, services, capitals, and people across its territories.

The bloc relies on observer countries and represents the eighth-largest economy in the world.

Nowadays, it has become the axis of a new way of doing business across the continent.

On an annual basis, the Pacific Alliance rotates the pro-tempore presidency among its members.

As is known, Peru assumed the pro-tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance at the bloc's summit held July 24 in the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta.

On the matter, the minister pointed out the Inca country is currently negotiating the membership of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Singapore

Afterwards, the nation will start a negotiation process for South Korea and Ecuador to become associated States.
