Peru is making the greatest effort to ensure that all vaccines to be acquired against the novel coronavirus are the safest and of top quality, as well as those which are part of the National Vaccination Plan, Deputy Public Health Minister Luis Suarez has affirmed.

"No vaccine that is used in the country or that will be purchased damages people's DNA. That is an inadequate interpretation of the characteristics of the vaccine," he emphasized.

Likewise, the government official argued that if most of the population is immunized, the probability that the disease will continue being transmitted is reduced.

"If 80% of the population is vaccinated, we will surely stop the transmission of the disease," he noted in this sense.

The deputy minister also affirmed that the Peruvian State has the obligation to make the vaccine available to citizens. However, he said, no one can force a person to be vaccinated.

Downward trend

Concerning the number of COVID-19 cases, Peru continues experiencing a decline, as the positive percentage in each region has been decreasing by over 30%, said
National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) Director Luis Rodriguez.

"In general terms, the trend of infections is decreasing in the country and, concerning the number of deaths, the trend has stagnated as of the 43rd week, given that 320 to 380 deaths are reported per week," he indicated.

Likewise, Rodriguez reported that a risk monitoring was conducted following latest events that occurred in Peru such as: the resumption of international flights and protests —with the intention of looking for or identifying a possible increase in cases. However, the reports show that there has been no greater number of infections.
