Peru: University students clean up Inca walls in downtown Cusco

19:02 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jul. 3.

Dozens of university students embarked on "Bring your Heritage to Life" —a clean-up drive to restore Inca walls near Cusco's Main Square.

The initiative is part of a conservation campaign promoted by State-run Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC).

The first day involved students from several professional schools at Cusco-based San Antonio Abad University, who were actively engaged in the cleaning of fine Inca walls.

Works are undertaken on a daily basis (four hours a day) and are slated to continue until July 6.

The Culture portfolio is committed to providing work materials and technical assistance for proper handling of lithic pieces to prevent their deterioration.

A brief ceremony marking the beginning of activities featured DDCC head Luis Nieto. He welcomed students' responsible attitude towards cultural heritage.

"It's really satisfying to see future professionals cleaning and protecting our ancestors' valuable heritage. This shows their deep affinity and respect for Inca culture vestiges, which comprise a source of pride for all of us, Cusco inhabitants," he stated.

According to Nieto, clean-up campaigns will be held steadily with the participation of heritage advocates.

It must be noted over 300 volunteers have signed up to intervene Inca and colonial walls in the city's streets and main square.
