The Government declared Pope Leo XIV's apostolic visit to Peru, scheduled for November 11–17, 2026, a matter of national interest, as well as the preparatory and related activities, meetings, and events to be held during the second half of this year.
It was signed by President Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi and Foreign Affairs Minister Alfonso Carlos Espa y Garces-Alvear.
According to the resolution, the Supreme Pontiff's visit, as he is Head of State of Vatican City, responds to an invitation extended by the Peruvian Government.
It includes a pastoral tour of Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa.
The resolution specifies that the declaration of national interest covers not only Pope Leo XIV's visit, but also the preparatory and related activities, meetings, and events to be held during the second half of 2026.
Additionally, the resolution authorizes the application of the special procurement procedure established under Law No. 30154, enabling the Foreign Affairs Ministry to carry out the necessary procurements so as to ensure the papal visit's proper organization and implementation.
According to the Supreme Resolution, this special procedure will apply to activities related to the visit that have been declared a matter of national interest, in accordance with the legal framework in force for official events involving the participation of Heads of State and other high-ranking dignitaries.
Article 3 of the resolution states that funding for the actions arising from the measure will be covered by the Foreign Affairs Ministry's institutional budget.
Pope Leo XIV's visit to Peru will take place over six days, from November 11 to 17, 2026.
It will include pastoral activities in the four cities planned by the Holy See and the Peruvian Government.
With this resolution, the Executive Branch formalizes the visit's status as a matter of national interest.
It also establishes the framework that will allow for the organization of activities and procurements related to the Supreme Pontiff's presence in the country.
