Peru, Sweden strengthen cooperation for sustainable management of mining

10:40 | Lima, Sep. 26.

Peru's Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mining cooperation with Sweden's Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation.

The deal is intended to forge links of cooperation between the two countries to develop a sustainable, responsible and efficient mining industry.

Inked on Tuesday, the document bears the signatures of MEM's head Francisco Ismodes and Swede Ambassador to Peru Anna Ferry.

The idea, among other things, is to share technology to make efficient use of inputs and resources —mainly water and energy— in mining activities.

Additionally, the agreement will serve to exchange experiences in developing dialogue with communities in order to prevent and manage social conflicts.

Ismodes noted the MoU will allow Peru to "make further progress towards the goal —set by the Government of Martin Vizcarra— of having a competitive and sustainable mining activity that contributes to the growth and development of regions."

The signing of the document, he added, will help "promote the use of technologies —existing in other countries— to make optimal use of our mining resources and place special emphasis on the management of environmental liabilities and closure of mines."

For her part, the Swede diplomat underlined that —under this arrangement— both countries will be able to exchange good experiences in the field of technology, but also in sustainability.

"This Memorandum of Understanding gives us the opportunity to cooperate more closely with Peru; through the Government, private sector, and universities," she pointed out.
