Environment Minister Nelly Paredes led Peru's participation in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Critical Minerals Forum on "Unlocking Investment and Growth through Partnership," held on Tuesday in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Peru's presence at this forum, organized by the OECD, reaffirms the South American country's international recognition as a strategic actor in discussions on critical minerals, energy transition, sustainable investment, and productive development.

During her remarks in the Latin America and the Caribbean session, participants addressed the challenges of enabling the region to move from being a supplier of minerals to consolidating itself as a hub of industrial development with greater added value.

The Peruvian government official underscored that critical minerals are essential for advancing clean technologies and accelerating the global energy transition.

The Cabinet member noted that Peru plays a significant role as the world's third-largest copper producer, a mineral essential for electrification, power grids, and electric mobility.

In that regard, the minister underscored the importance of promoting sustainable investment with added value, as well as high environmental and social standards.

"Mining is in our history. Today, we are the world's third-largest copper producer and account for nearly 12% of global production and reserves. The challenge is not only how much we produce, but how and with whom we do it: with added value, sustainability, and better living conditions," she stated.

During the forum, the importance of advancing traceability, transparency, and responsible business conduct was highlighted, along with efficient water and biodiversity management featuring community participation.

Likewise, it was underscored that regional integration must be strengthened, standards across Latin America harmonized, investment in processing and recycling promoted, and human capital developed.

Earlier, the Peruvian minister took part in the Interregional Ministerial Roundtable, "Building Partnerships in Minerals for Growth and Development," where regional perspectives on cooperation in the mining sector were shared.

Bilateral meeting

Within the framework of bilateral meetings, Environment Minister Nelly Paredes held a meeting with Türkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar to discuss the strategic role of mineral resources in energy transition and sustainable development.

The Environment sector's head highlighted Peru's role as the world's third-largest copper producer.

Similarly, she stressed the priority of advancing toward greater industrialization with added value in the mining value chain under an environmentally and socially responsible approach.

The forum brought together ministers, senior officials, private-sector representatives, and international experts, consolidating itself as a strategic platform promoted by the OECD to foster partnerships and sustainable growth.
