Peru: Prosecutor's Office seizes 16 homes of people involved in Odebrecht case

14:14 | Lima, Mar. 20.

Peruvian Prosecutor Geovana Mori —member of the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group— on Wednesday raided 16 properties linked to the citizens under investigation for the Costa Verde-Callao Stretch Project.

As is known, Brazilian Odebrecht company admitted to having paid bribes to former Callao Region Governor Felix Moreno (2011-2018) to move the project forward.

Mori indicated 17 people are currently under probe for this matter, including the former governor. For this case, 18-month preventive detention was ordered against him in 2017. However, it was later revoked by the Judicial Branch.

Moreno is a fugitive from justice since last January when he was sentenced to five years in prison for another felony comprised in The Oquendo Estate Case.

According to the prosecutor, the recent seizures are related to the statements recently taken by the special team in Brazil.

"We are in a preparatory investigation stage," she told Canal N news channel.

Odebrecht

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such as: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018)

Former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori —currently under preventive detention— also allegedly received money from Odebrecht for her 2011 campaign.
