Peru promotes reforms in four key economic areas for OECD accession

12:56 | Lima, Jun. 1.

Peru continues to make progress in its accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

To date, it has secured approval from 7 of the organization's 23 evaluating committees while fostering strategic reforms in four key areas of the national economy, Economy and Finance Minister Rodolfo Acuña stated on Monday.

He specified that Peru has already received favorable evaluations from the Health Committee in June 2024; the Regional Development Policy Committee in December 2024; the Regulatory Policy Committee in April 2025; the Fisheries and Education Policy Committees in November 2025; and the Consumer Policy and Agriculture Committees in April 2026.

The government official explained that, to consolidate this process, the Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) is directly coordinating actions with four committees linked to priority issues for the sector.

In the area of budgeting, the MEF is boosting improvements aimed at strengthening the efficiency of public spending, from planning through the execution of resources.

In the fiscal sphere, the MEF is working to assess and adopt international best practices to enhance the economy's competitiveness and broaden the tax base.

In the field of financial markets, actions are focused on improving the governance of supervisory and regulatory bodies, as well as strengthening both the public and private pension systems.

In the realm of investment, the MEF is fostering policies aimed at improving the business climate and promoting responsible business conduct among multinational corporations.

Active participation

"Since receiving the invitation to join the OECD, Peru has received evaluation missions from organization officials and has actively participated in accession assessments in France. To complete its accession to the OECD, the country must successfully pass evaluations by 23 committees, seven of which have already issued favorable opinions," the MEF head detailed.

"Adopting OECD standards and best practices will enable better outcomes for the country and our fellow citizens," he added.

The Cabinet member also highlighted the sector's coordinating role in this process.

"We coordinate directly with four key committees; we also participate in and provide technical support to other public-sector entities in their respective evaluation processes, given the cross-cutting and multisectoral nature of the standards required by the OECD," Minister Acuña indicated.

In this regard, he said the MEF reaffirms its commitment to continuing to foster reforms that strengthen the quality of public policies, enhance the country's competitiveness, and support Peru's OECD accession process.
