The Ministry of Culture, through the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) in Cusco, announced that Huayna Picchu Mountain will remain temporarily closed from June 1 to 30, 2026, due to specialized conservation and maintenance work on Route 3-A of Circuit 3 within the Machu Picchu Citadel.

During this period, work will be carried out to preserve the archaeological structures and enhance safety conditions along the ascent route to Huayna Picchu.

The work will cover various sections of the route, from the control checkpoint to the mountain's summit.

Scheduled activities include the consolidation of pre-Hispanic stairways, retaining walls, and drainage systems, as well as maintenance of the walking surfaces using traditional techniques.

In addition, steel-cable railings will be replaced in areas with the steepest slopes and highest risk.

The work will also include environmental conservation measures, such as removing moss from archaeological structures, clearing vegetation, and carrying out the controlled removal of roots and shrubs that affect the stability of terraces and pathways.

Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park Chief Cesar Medina said the work is essential to ensure the proper conservation of Huayna Picchu and to allow for a comprehensive technical intervention without the presence of visitors.

He added that the work will be supported at all times by specialized rescue personnel in the highest-risk areas, as well as by biologists overseeing the management and control of plant species along the route.

Finally, the DDC Cusco advised tour operators and visitors to take the necessary precautions, noting that the measure is intended to preserve one of the most emblematic areas of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
