Peru President: "We've dealt a new blow to corruption"

11:01 | Lima, Aug. 3.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday morning assured his administration will combat corruption firmly, no matter who falls.

Speaking from Lima's La Victoria district, the statesman highlighted an operation against the criminal gang Los Intocables Ediles (The Town Council's Untouchables).

According to Vizcarra, a new blow has been delivered to corruption in this intervention, which has seen La Victoria Mayor Elias Cuba Bautista and his son arrested for alleged links with the criminal band.

"In the early hours of today —through a joint operation conducted by Public Ministry and National Police— we dealt a new blow to corruption, which does so much damage," he stated.

"This criminal gang is called The Untouchables, and what is clear here is that there are no untouchables in this government. We're going to combat corruption, wherever it may come from and no matter who falls," he continued.

On the other hand, the Head of State affirmed his administration will fight to end violence against women with the same vigor they fight corruption.

In this sense, he noted the change of attitude in the police when it comes to handling women's complaints.

His remarks were made as he opened a Women Emergency Center (CEM) attached to Apolo police station in La Victoria district.

During the event, he was joined by Peru's First Lady Maribel Diaz, as well as Ministers Mauro Medina (Interior) and Ana Maria Mendieta (Women and Vulnerable Populations).
