Peru President: We will work permanently on disaster prevention

11:01 | Lima, Mar. 12.

President Martin Vizcarra has affirmed it is necessary to undertake continuing efforts on natural disaster prevention and ratified his commitment to promoting training and a culture of prevention among Peruvian citizens.

Months before a drill, the government will work on informing and educating members of society, including children, parents, and the general population, so they can be prepared to face these natural events.

"The commitment we will make is how we provide this information (on prevention) to all the people. The support we receive from the Japanese Government is invaluable," the Head of State expressed.

Likewise, the top official noted the participation of entities and sectors involved in the prevention of natural disasters such as the Armed Forces and scientific institutions.

This year, the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) will work with the Japanese technical team to adapt the methodology presented at the meeting. Plus, they will plan the night-time earthquake and tsunami drill to take place on November 5.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra and the Japanese Embassy have coordinated three initiatives aimed at strengthening natural disaster preparation.

Remarks were made during the closing ceremony of the Natural Disaster and Early Warning Management Meeting. This event was co-organized by the Japanese Embassy in Peru and Indeci.

On the occasion, the President was joined by Ministers Nestor Popolizio (Foreign Affairs), Jose Huerta (Defense) and Japanese officials.
