Peru President: "We will move forward by standing united and in solidarity"

17:08 | Lima, Apr. 26.

President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday called on Peruvians to stand together and in solidarity to get the country through this difficult time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The concept is Peruvian solidarity. We can move forward together. If we cannot understand this after such a terrible disease, then we have learned little from the critical situation that mankind is currently facing," he stated.

When asked about the proposal to increase the tax rates on high-income earners and the wealth of business groups, the President explained that this issue has not been deeply analyzed by the Executive Branch since special powers have not yet been asked to legislate on the matter.

"The concept suggests that we must show solidarity. In fact, this is a necessary requirement to overcome such a difficult situation. A State that uses its savings —over S/5 billion (around US$1.47 billion)— to serve more than 6 million people shows solidarity," he expressed.

Likewise, he affirmed that low-income Peruvians, who are being directly affected by the pandemic because they stick to the instructions to overcome the disease, also show solidarity.

In this sense, he pointed out that all the proposed alternatives shall be analyzed.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Sunday marks the forty-second day of mandatory social isolation.
