Peru economy to operate at 83% capacity at end of Phase 2 of reopening

18:22 | Lima, Jun. 4.

Economy and Finance Minister Maria Antonieta Alva on Thursday projected that at the end of Phase 2 of the economic reopening —recently approved by the Peruvian Government— the country will operate at 83% of its productive capacity.

"At the beginning of the pandemic, we prepared an economic plan with very clear phases: the containment phase and the economic reactivation phase. About one month ago, we started the transition to the economic reactivation phase with Phase 1 of the economic reopening, and Phase 2 was authorized today," Alva explained.

"During the beginning of the pandemic, the economy was operating at 44% of its productive capacity, and by the end of Phase 2, it is expected to move to 83%," she added.

The minister announced that —as part of the economic reactivation— the Government is preparing public spending programs to generate employment.

"These days we have been designing the extension of Trabaja Peru (Work, Peru) Program and various other activities under Compras a MyPeru (a government-led initiative for stimulating production by micro and small-sized enterprises-MSEs)," she commented.

"The idea is to gradually begin the economic reopening process," the high-ranking official continued.

Additionally, the Cabinet member emphasized that her sector has an aggressive program of technical assistance for the implementation of public works in regional and local governments.

On this occasion, President Martin Vizcarra was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Thursday marks the eighty-first day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
