Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra's initiatives presented to Congress —which are aimed at reforming the justice system— have sympathized with citizens' demands, former Ombudswoman Beatriz Merino affirmed Monday.
"The President's initiatives are good because they have sympathized with citizens' feelings of frustration, hopelessness, and anger due to the information revealed by the
audio recordings," she told RPP radio and news station.
According to Merino, it is now the responsibility of the Legislative and Executive Branches to seek
consensus and avoid confrontations, as well as for Congress to make the necessary assessment of the proposals.
"Those who love Peru and have experience working at the State should seek consensus to show the country that its institutions can still be trusted," she emphasized.
Thus, it is important to put aside political differences and consider not to give any room for terrorism, drug trafficking, or
corruption.
"Peru is everybody's responsibility," Merino pointed out.
Additionally, she commented the
referendum's proposed topics are just a portion of political and justice reform, as there are other important matters to address such as the preferential voting system.
