Peru President: State of emergency declaration shows Govt's willingness to work

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed the state of emergency declaration within 24 hours for the areas affected by the recent 8.0 M earthquake shows his administration's willingness to work.

Within this framework, the Head of State indicated the declaration was necessary so mayors, governors, and ministries could immediately attend to the damages caused by the quake. 

According to Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP), the major quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale hit Loreto region on Sunday at 2:41 AM.


He went on to add 400 educational institutions were damaged, which will be repaired as soon as possible.

"We are working, prioritizing human beings (…). It does not matter if they are in a big city, in Peru's highlands or the jungle. We must work together," the top official stated.

Furthermore, he informed regional and local authorities can allocate resources from their budgets to attend to the emergency. These resources will later be reimbursed. 

Moreover, one of the immediate actions was to reestablish traffic on Lagunas Highway, a concern expressed by its mayor.

Remarks were made during the delivery of property titles to 66 native communities in rainforest Loreto region.
