Peru: Ministers monitor affected areas after magnitude 8.0 quake in Loreto region

10:52 | Alto Amazonas (Loreto region), May. 27.

Several State ministers remain in the areas affected by the powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake that struck Alto Amazonas province —in Loreto region— on Sunday morning and has left two dead so far.

Production Minister Rocio Barrios is in Iquitos city, Loreto's capital, one of the most affected areas by the strong quake.

She is monitoring the delivery of humanitarian aid and assessing the impact of the damage caused by the seismic event.

According to the official, school classes have been suspended across Alto Amazonas, where a state of emergency has been declared —as a security measure— until the inspection of the infrastructure is completed.

In the next few hours, Education Minister Flor Pablo will head to Lagunas district —where the epicenter was located— to monitor the area and visit the most affected places.

Before leaving Tarapoto, in San Martin region, the Education head reported cracks and additional damage to 64 schools in several provinces.

She confirmed the suspension of classes in more than 600 educational institutions across five regions until the extent of the damage is completely assessed.

The report is being carried out by experts at Local Education Management Units (UGEL) located in the affected zones.

For her part, Transport and Communications Minister Maria Jara is in Cajamarca inspecting the area and the state of roads.
