Peru President reaffirms commitment to defeating COVID-19

14:50 | Tacna (Tacna region), May. 16.

President Martin Vizcarra on Saturday afternoon ratified in Tacna the Government's commitment to continue working with the aim of defeating the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Peru.

"Let's continue working, there is still a long way to go. We have been in this fight for more than 60 days, a fight to which all Peruvians are committed. From Tacna, the heroic city, we say that our spirit and efforts do not vanish," he expressed.

After recalling that Tacna was 50 years under the ruling of Chile —following a war in the 19th century— and that its population never gave up and taught a lesson in sacrifice, the Head of State said that the same conviction must be put in place once again to defeat COVID-19.

"All Peruvians have to put into practice that love for the homeland, that dedication, and sacrifice. From here, the heroic Tacna, we ratify our commitment to working, with efforts, dedication, and love for the homeland, until we all together manage to defeat the COVID-19," he expressed.

"This effort must be continuous, we cannot let our guard down, as we must persevere. The virus does not let its guard down, it is latent and waiting to continue attacking," he stated.

The leader also insisted on the need to continue abiding by the measures such as hand washing and social distancing.

As is known, Mr. Vizcarra arrived this afternoon in the southern region of Tacna, where he participated in the delivery of medical supplies to assist COVID-19 patients.

The batch consisted of 15 mechanical ventilators, diagnostic tests and personal protective equipment.

Saturday marks the sixty-second day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
