Peru President: Lima 2019 to unite the continent

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will be a sports event that will unite all the peoples of the Americas.

In this sense, the Head of State noted that the lighting ceremony took place at a symbolic and important location such as the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

As is known, the Pan American Torch arrived last Wednesday in the Imperial City of Cusco.

"Welcome to the sporting festival. Peru is waiting for you with open arms (…)," the top official expressed.

Likewise, the statesman indicated that this event unites two thousand-year-old cultures through sports, as the torch had traveled from Mexico to Peru.

He went on to add this symbol begins a journey across 26 Peruvian cities before reaching the Lima-based National Stadium on July 26 for the Opening Ceremony.

Furthermore, President Vizcarra stated he is confident the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games will be successful and spectacular, as was the Peruvian squad's recent victory against the Chilean one at Copa America Brasil 2019.

Remarks were made during the Fire Lighting Ceremony of the Pan American Torch in Machu Picchu.

On the occasion, he was joined by Lima Mayor Jorge Muñoz, Lima 2019 Organizing Committee President Carlos Neuhaus, as well as other authorities.
