Peru President: Gov't fully willing to dialogue concerning Tia Maria mining project

11:02 | Lima, Jul. 16.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday reaffirmed that his administration is fully willing to dialogue concerning the Tia Maria mining project (Arequipa region), adding he hopes conditions will be created in order to listen to all parties.

In this sense, the Head of State indicated the Ministers of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation; Agriculture; and Environment are directly involved in the project. Thus, the government as a whole is willing to discuss the matter.

"We hope the conditions are created. Two parties are necessary in order to begin a dialogue," he expressed.

Likewise, the top official stressed that solutions, consensus, and the best decisions are found through dialogue

Furthermore, the statesman pointed out the construction permit does not mean construction will start, as the conditions for this investment are not present.

He went on to add Arequipa is an important region for the Inca country that can count on the government's support for its development.

"Let's sit together, search for dialogue mechanisms. We are willing to listen to all arguments," President Vizcarra said.

Remarks were made after delivering water and sewage works in Lima's Ate Vitarte district.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra expressed his administration's willingness for dialogue to resolve differences over the project, which Southern Peru Copper Corporation expects to develop in Islay Province (Arequipa region).

However, Executive Branch spokespersons warned that —even though the license has been issued— this does not mean the mining company can begin operations. It needs to earn —through dialogue— a social license first.

For its part, the company committed itself not to start operations before setting up a dialogue space to resolve social concerns.
