handed over 20 water pumps to the mayors of five districts in northern Piura province on Wednesday as part of government measures to address eventual rainfall resulting from the El Niño phenomenon.
In her speech, the Head of State told municipal representatives that it is important to work together and begin preparations now to prevent possible flooding.
Likewise, she noted that all authorities must be prepared for any emergency.
The top official said forecasts regarding El Niño are concerning.
The President noted that, since taking office on July 28, this has been one of her top priorities, along with citizen security.
President Fujimori highlighted that dredging work on the Piura River began three weeks ago.
Thanks to 43 pieces of heavy machinery operating around the clock, 30% progress has been made so far toward the goal of removing 500,000 metric tons of material from the river channel.
"I would like work to progress at the same pace in all three sections, which is why we are here," Fujimori said, adding that coordination is underway with the Piura Region Government to provide machinery so the work can advance more quickly.
She also welcomed the private sector's involvement in efforts to address El Niño phenomenon.
Supervision of work on Piura River
Earlier, the President oversaw dredging work being carried out on Piura River in the region of the same name as part of preventive measures against the El Niño phenomenon.
The president arrived at the Los Ejidos area, where she received a report on the measures being carried out by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), through the National Water Authority (ANA), to address the risk of flooding.
Midagri head Marco Vinelli also visited the site, along with Ministers Rafael Belaunde (Defense) and Mauricio Arnillas (Housing, Construction, and Sanitation), who are part of the delegation led by the President.
Additionally, Piura Region Governor Luis Neyra was present and spoke with the Head of State about the work being carried out at the site.
The area being worked on extends from Los Ejidos to Bolognesi Bridge, where more than 261,000 cubic meters of sediment are expected to be removed to restore the Piura River's channel, as well as to protect residents and crops in the event of heavy rains.
After the inspection, the top official boarded a vehicle with the delegation to travel to another section of the aforementioned river, which is covered by the supervision activities as well.
To lead preventive measures against El Niño phenomenon, President Fujimori arrived in the Piura region this morning, marking the Head of State's tenth trip outside Lima.
