Peru President: Confidence motion strengthens democracy

13:32 | Huarmey (Ancash region), Sep. 17.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed the confidence motion —recently introduced by the Executive Branch to Congress— strengthens democracy instead of weakening it.

The Head of State ruled out the measure proposed last Sunday might affect democracy or the rule of law, as some Fuerza Popular (opposition party) members have suggested.

"On the contrary, the confidence motion request was made under strict respect for the Constitution, and that strengthens the democracy all Peruvians must respect," he expressed.

Thus, Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva will on Wednesday attend Congress —joined by Ministerial Cabinet members— to directly submit the confidence motion so it will be debated.

Yesterday, the Head of State announced his administration will request Parliament a confidence vote linked to the four projects aimed at boosting a political-justice reform. They are related to the lawmakers' re-election, bicameral parliamentary system, political parties' private financing, as well as National Council of the Magistracy (CNM).

Last week, Fuerza Popular decided to abstain in the voting process of the CNM reform project, which prevented its approval.
