Peru's opposition-controlled Parliament has dismissed President Pedro Pablo Kuczysnki's Cabinet in a vote of no-confidence, pitching the country into a political crisis and forcing ministers to leave their posts.
Led by Congress Chairman Luis Galarreta on Thursday, the debate lasted over 7 hours.
The Parliament plenary session resulted in 77 votes against, 16 abstentions and 22 in favor of the Cabinet's continuation in office.
The measure followed Fuerza Popular party's decision to censure Education Minister Marilu Martens.
Later, in his address to Congress, Zavala said the motion was intended to guarantee education reform and governability policies.
The chief minister explained his request occurred as provided by the Constitution that was previously passed by the political group that controls Congress today.
In previous statements, Galarreta criticized the chief minister for taking such action, describing it as an irresponsible move by the Government.
According to Peruvian Constitution, the Head of State can call new elections if Congress ousts his Cabinets twice.
Mr. Kuczynski has 72 hours, since the vote of no-confidence was announced, to swear in a new Cabinet.
