Peru President: Chinchero Airport to have international status

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday assured that the future Chinchero Airport in Cusco region will be an international gateway to welcome not only national visitors, but also foreign ones.

In this sense, the Head of State indicated assessments and tests were carried out for nearly 15 years, before making the decision to build this airport that will replace the current Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport.

"We have the proposals of various interested countries. We will guarantee this will be a state-of-the-art project of international level that will serve Peruvians and visitors from all around the world," the top official expressed. 

In this sense, he explained extremely developed nations in the tourism domain —such as Canada and South Korea— have shown interest in executing this project that will benefit Cusco region

"Cusco is an example of tourist destinations because of Machu Picchu, but (Alejandro) Velasco Astete Airport is overcrowded. Thus, the construction of a new one (to be) located in Chinchero is in the process," the statesman added. 

Remarks were made during the Food Forever Experience Symposium, where he affirmed the Government has taken responsible measures to mitigate climate change impacts in the Inca country.
