Peru President calls on citizens' conscience to continue facing COVID-19

00:01 | Lima, May. 6.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra has affirmed that the Government will not lower its guard against the COVID-19 and called on the population's conscience to face the pandemic with responsibility, order, and not to be overconfident.

In this sense, the Head of State indicated that order must start at households and their corresponding neighborhoods, without having to wait for the presence of law enforcement in order to comply with the current emergency restrictions.

"We must set the example," he expressed adding that Peruvians will be able to leave this situation behind if they stand united.

The top official pointed out that COVID-19 is not a disease of one or two months, but it forces everyone to get prepared to face up to three stages in order to resume the path of development.

The first stage —the statesman recalled— is one of containment; the second is an intermediate with the resumption of activities; and the last one would start next year.

"The worst thing that can happen to Peruvians is to become overconfident. Some countries that were overcoming the disease became overconfident and there was a new outbreak," he stated.

As the Peruvian leader remarked, people must be responsible and aware that "the future is in our hands," and it is up to everyone in unity to overcome the emergency.

"At times like these, voices of discouragement emerge, which try to infect the population. It would be the worst thing that could happen to us as a society," he remarked.

Mr. Vizcarra added that the economic consequences of the pandemic may be similar to those of a conventional war, like the one Peru had with Chile in the 19th century.

Back then —he said— the war was faced with division among citizens, which was the main mistake. Thus, the President insisted on the need for unity to have better results, not to diminish the efforts, and to ignore the voices of discouragement.

"From the outside it is very easy to criticize, but the Government's spirit and efforts will not go down," he concluded.
