Peru President: Bonus transfers to total US$1.168 billion in May

16:34 | Lima, May. 13.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday affirmed that —at the end of this month— the transfer of bonuses worth S/4 billion (about US$1.168 billion) to families affected by the coronavirus pandemic will be achieved.

Likewise, the statesman indicated that S/2 billion (about US$584 million) has already been transferred. The other S/2 billion (about US$584 million) —to be delivered this month— will add up to S/4 billion (about US$1.168 billion).

According to a report issued by the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion and the Ministry of Labor, around S/2 billion (about US$584 million) has been transferred to the lists of beneficiaries to date.

"There will be S/1.160 billion (about US$338.68 million) left, which will be transferred in June to the families that are beneficiaries of social programs," he stressed.

"May is going to be the key month for the economic transfer of this S/760 bonus, and we are going to reactivate the soup kitchens in June," he added.

Furthermore, Mr. Vizcarra mentioned that the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion will serve the largest sector of households that receive the bonus.

He also stressed that various mechanisms for digital transfers are being used, so that beneficiaries do not have to physically collect the bonuses at bank branches.

"We are looking for all these mechanisms," he concluded.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Wednesday marks the fifty-ninth day of mandatory social isolation.
