Peru President: Binational Cabinet to mark turning point

14:32 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), Nov. 7.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that the 13th Peru-Ecuador Binational Cabinet will mark a turning point towards change, in order to move from the will to the facts and results for the benefit of both countries' populations.

The Head of State stressed that joint efforts will enable the commitments to be fulfilled, turning them into facts with the aim of claiming "mission accomplished."

The top official recalled that both nations have a close relationship based on friendship and trust, which allow the joining of efforts towards resolving problems.

One of those problems —discussed with local authorities— is the contamination of the Puyango-Tumbes Basin. In this sense, he noted that facing this issue will be a priority for both countries' Governments.

The area, he remarked, serves as support for Tumbes' economic activities. Thus, this attention demands the maximum effort, in order to significantly improve the quality of its waters.

In addition, he said, the basin requires regulation through storage and damming, issues on which it is appropriate for both Governments to make a joint decision.

"These topics have been raised during a pre-Cabinet work meeting. There is acceptance and recognition by the President and Government of Ecuador to address them with the importance and priority they require," Vizcarra emphasized.

"Today as President of Peru, and with the support and commitment of the President of Ecuador, we have made the first decisions for the benefit of the population," the statesman concluded.

It must be noted Binational Cabinets constitute a mechanism for political dialogue between two countries with the purpose of working on specific issues of common concern included in the bilateral agenda.

The 13th Peru-Ecuador Binational Cabinet has five thematic axes of work: Social and cultural issues; Production, trade, investment, and tourism-related issues; Environmental, energy, and mining issues; Infrastructure and connectivity; Security and defense.
