Peruvian, Ecuadorian Presidents meet in Tumbes

11:55 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), Nov. 7.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra and his Ecuadorian counterpart Lenin Moreno on Thursday started the Presidential Meeting prior to the 13th Peru-Ecuador Binational Cabinet held in the northern city of Tumbes.

Via social media, Mr. Vizcarra —the hosting nation's Head of State— indicated that the Binational Cabinet will lead to making decisions in favor of both countries' citizens.

The Presidential Meeting and 13th Peru-Ecuador Binational Cabinet are held on November 6-7 in northern Tumbes region.

The thematic axes proposed are:

1. Social and cultural issues.
2. Production, trade, investment, and tourism-related issues.
3. Environmental, energy, and mining issues.
4. Infrastructure and connectivity.
5. Security and defense.

Under this platform, cabinets of both countries are planning to align the Tumbes Action Plan commitments with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, and guide the joint work within a wide and horizontal framework.

Likewise, they seek to implement concrete solutions on management, use, and decontamination of water resources in border river basins.

This Binational Cabinet will serve to strengthen coordinated surveillance measures, including unauthorized steps in order to combat: human trafficking, smuggling of migrants, illegal mining, and smuggling of goods.

The two countries seek to promote sustained and comprehensive actions in the fight against illegal mining. Thus, the first Meeting of the Mixed Commission to Combat Illegal Mining shall be convened within this framework.

It must be noted Binational Cabinets constitute a mechanism for political dialogue between two countries with the purpose of working on specific issues of common concern included in the bilateral agenda.
