Peru: Police arrests citizens linked to Lima Metro Line 1-Odebrecht case

13:30 | Lima, Apr. 18.

Ex-high-ranking officials of former President Alan Garcia's second term in office (2006-2011) have been detained by the judicial police, over alleged bribes for the awarding of Lima Metro Line 1 to Brazilian Odebrecht corporation.

Last Wednesday, the Judicial Branch ordered preliminary detention of recently-deceased Garcia and other eight people —who had been included in the investigation on the alleged bribes paid by the foreign company in exchange for projects.

The police arrested ex-Transport and Communications Minister Enrique Cornejo, ex-high-ranking official of the APRA administration Miguel Atala, his son Samir Atala, ex-President of Lima's Autonomous Electric Train Authority (ATTE) Oswaldo Plascencia, ex-member of the Lima Metro Line 1 Stretch 2 Tender Committee Jorge Menacho, and ex-Director of Provias Raul Torres.

Ex-Secretary-General of the Presidency and former Minister Luis Nava —a close aide of the late Garcia— remains hospitalized in a local clinic, but the judicial police guards the location awaiting his discharge to arrest him.

However, Jose Nava —Luis Nava's son and Don Reyna company manager— is a fugitive from justice.

According to Nava, he is in the United States for eye treatment and will return to the Inca country on May 7.
